NACTOY

The North American Car, Truck & Utility of the Year (NACTOY) award winners will be announced early next year. In the meantime, the semifinalists for these coveted awards have been unveiled. To be eligible for the award, a vehicle must be new or substantially redesigned – and it must go on sale in the calendar year for which it is entered into the competition. Here is the list of semifinalists.

 

Cars: Alfa-Romeo Giulia, Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Hyundai Ioniq Plug-In Hybrid, Kia Stinger Sport Sedan, Lexus LC 500.

 

Trucks: Chevrolet Colorado ZR2, Ford Expedition, Lincoln Navigator.

 

Utilities: Alfa-Romeo Stelvio, BMW X3, Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Equinox, Chevrolet Traverse, Jeep Compass, Land Rover Discovery, Volvo XC60.

 

About the NACTOY Awards

Established in 1994, the annual NACTOY awards are handed out based on the voting results of a jury of 60 automotive journalists across the United States and Canada. These experts work for prestigious auto-related magazines, television, radio newspapers and Web sites. Jurors put dozens of vehicles through the paces in order to determine the semifinalists. They are given a total of 25 points each to assign to the vehicles on the list … while being allowed to award no more than 10 points to any of their selections.

 

For the first time in the history of the NACTOY awards, there will be no U.S.-made automobiles vying for top car honors. In addition, one of the most anticipated sedans, the Tesla Model 3, was withdrawn from consideration by the automaker due to the company’s focus on scaling up production.

 

Prior to the announcement of the winners, each category will be trimmed down to three finalists. (Note: Because there are only three trucks in the semifinals, each will automatically be a finalist.)

 

Last year’s NACTOY winners were the Chevrolet Bolt (car), Honda Ridgeline (truck) and Chrysler Pacifica minivan (utility).
